Miss Coe is currently student teaching in Mrs. Doran's first grade classroom at Loon Lake Elementary School in Wixom, Michigan. She is extremely fortunate to have Mrs. Doran as a mentor as well as to have the 26 students who greet her with big smiles each morning! Follow this blog to learn more about what Miss Coe and her students are up to each week!

Week 31 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had a very fun week packed with learning! We were having SO much fun that Miss Coe wound up with a cold and had to leave school early on Friday - bummer :-(. Thankfully Mrs. Doran was more than willing to take over with our first grade friends!

Miss Coe did get to join us for our field trip this week, which was very cool! We saw Shoemaker and the Elves at the Marquis Theatre in Northville. We sat in the audience and watched two shoemakers who were struggling through hard times get visited by elves who made them wonderful shoes to sell! The actors and actresses did a great job, and Bennett even knew one of the actresses in the play! THANK YOU again to the chaperones who were able to come with us and all who volunteered!!

As April came to a close this week we finished up poetry month by writing our own haikus! We did a fabulous job with our work and Miss Coe and will be posting lots of our poetry on our bulletin board in the hallway. Loon Lake staff and students will be so impressed!

This week we got new books to read during Reader's Workshop! We practiced finding the main characters in our books and identifying some of their character traits. Miss Coe has been reading Pippi Longstocking to us after lunch each day, and we practiced by identifying Pippi as adventurous, brave, dishonest, and silly!

In math we have been using what we know about equal parts to learn about fractions! When we talk about fractions we often talk about dividing things up evenly: pizzas, crackers, pies...it makes us hungry sometimes! Miss Coe is impressed by how quickly we are catching on to fractions - it must be the food relation! ;-)

This week in science we learned about solids, liquids, and gases. We talked about what kind of characteristics solids have, thought of different examples of solids, and then organized our solids into where we could find them: at home, at school, both place, or neither place. We found that many of the solids we thought of (like chairs, TVs, computers, tables) could be found at home and at school! We also got new science notebooks this week that we will use to keep track of all of our scientific discoveries! Fun!!

Miss Coe will be back in action this week in Room 119! Her last day with her 26 first grade friends is Thursday, and she is already feeling very sad :-(. Expect visits from Miss Coe after she leaves! Have a great week!

Week 30 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! It seemed like we hadn't had a five-day week of school in quite awhile, but we had a great full week! Tuesday was Earth Day and we learned a lot about how to care for our environment. We read Dr. Seuss's The Lorax with our 5th grade buddies and talked about different things we can do to make sure our Earth remains a clean and healthy place for us to live. We decided that we should all be like the Lorax and "speak for the trees"!

In writing this week we continued to learn about poetry (remember, April is poetry month!). Miss Coe taught us about a certain type of poem called a haiku. We learned that haikus have a specify number of syllables, and we practiced identifying how many syllables are in a word. We counted syllables in our own writing, and are working on creating our own haikus! Fun!

We connected this to reading by looking for words or sentences with a specific number of syllables. To help us, we said the word out loud and clapped for every beat in the word. Miss Coe continues to meet with reading groups during Reader's Workshop, and we will be getting new books to read with her next week! Our reading skills continue to grow - the time spent reading at home is really paying off!

We did FANTASTIC on our Unit 7 math test last week! This told Miss Coe that we learned a lot about the many shapes we have been studying. The test got sent home on Friday so you can take a look at what we learned! This week we learned about equal parts of a whole and how to split something into halves, thirds, fourths, etc. We will continue to practice this and learn about fractions!

Since we finally had a Friday of school again, we were able to have a Mystery Reader come in and visit us! We were so excited to have Hailey's mom come in and read, and we loved the book she chose! As always, let Miss Coe or Mrs. Doran know if you would like to come in as a Mystery Reader!

Lastly, we were very excited to visit the Scholastic Book Fair in our very own media center this week! Many of us were able to get something new to read, and we all had fun exploring the variety of books!

As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers, and it's hard to believe this week is already the start of May! Hopefully this saying holds true and we have lots of flowers and sunshine coming our way! Can you believe that students only have 29 days of school left this year? Miss Coe only has 9 more school days at Loon Lake, and is already feeling sad about leaving her 26 new friends. We will be sure to spend our remaining school days learning a LOT, and having fun doing it! Have a wonderful week!

Week 29 in Review

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful week off. We had a short, four-day week this week, but packed in a lot of fun and learning! We were having so much fun that Miss Coe forgot to take a group picture - yikes! You will surely see your kids' smiling faces on this page next week.

We celebrated another birthday this week! Emily H. turned 7 on Thursday and got to take Ollie home for an extra long weekend!

In math this week we took a test on Unit 7 to see what we learned and did a fabulous job. Look for it coming home this week! We also started Unit 8 off by reviewing what we knew about coins and place value. Soon we will be learning parts of a whole and fractions - fun!

April is Poetry month and this week in writing we learned about a certain kind of poetry called Alliteration. We had a lot of fun forming silly sentences that had many words starting with the same letter!

On Thursday we had some special teachers from Science Alive visit us - and they brought animals! We got to see and touch a chinchilla, armadillo, baby alligator, and a snake! It was very exciting and we learned a lot about what animals need to survive and how we should be treating them!

In reading we've been hunting for special words: verbs, nouns, and adjectives. We know that a noun is a person, place, or thing, a verb is something you do, and an adjective is a word that describes! Knowing these parts of speech helped us when we were writing our alliteration sentences!

Since we had no school Friday, we had no Mystery Reader or fifth grade buddies this week. We do still have availability for more Mystery Readers to come in and read a book to our class. If you would like to do so, let Miss Coe know and we will plan a time and day that works best!

Have a wonderful long weekend, and we'll see you on Monday!
